Problem awareness does not predict littering: A field study on littering in the Gambia

Littering is a worldwide problem. Recently, it has become problem in countries that until now have had much less of some types trash (e.g., plastics), such as Africa. Most research on factors influencing littering been conducted more industrialized regions and shown personal norms social mainly explain why people litter or act an environmentally unfriendly way. One prominent model, the Norm Activation Model (NAM) postulates awareness consequences (AC), ascription responsibility (AR), norm (PN) are positively related with behavioral intention (BI) behavior. In this field study we tested model Gambia, West Africa, offer new insights. We approached 132 street invited them to candy tasting observe their behavior wrapper followed by interview assessing AC, AR, PN, BI. Structural equation modeling confirmed overall fit data “Western” hypothesized model. However importantly differences emerged, Gambians high but was not Moreover, antilittering PN low. The results suggest interventions, which aim decrease littering, should focus promoting strengthen context where facilities yet available. Future investigate how developing could also help keep streets cleaner.
